ESG Journey with Environmental Excellence

VA North Star (VANS) has initiated an ESG assessment for a manufacturing client in Gauteng province. The Client has more than 15 large scale furnaces and operations across 10 locations in the region. With more than 9 group companies and 2000+ employees, it’s one of the fastest growing manufacturing businesses in South Africa.
Client manufactures a wide array of steel products in a safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly manner. Copper unit is a secondary production company and a significant raw material recycler in Southern Africa. Aluminium entity is a fully, vertically integrated, end-to-end aluminium facility that produces various products such as billets, ingots, slabs and extruded products Based in Alrode, Johannesburg, it has a national footprint as well as a presence in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Client got the Atmospheric Emission License in term of section 41(1) of the National environmental management: Air Quality Act 2004 (Act No 39 of 2004) in respect of listed activities like combustion installation, secondary Aluminium production, foundries and production and casting of Bronze, brass, and copper.
As per the license, Client needs to adhere to the duty of care obligations as set out in section 28 of NEMA. also need to undertake the necessary measures to minimize or contain the atmospheric emissions as per section 28(3) of NEMA.
Scope
•  Conduct current state ESG assessment to meet the Net Zero standards for the Steel , Aluminium & Copper businesses.
•  Subsequently, implement Carbon Accounting and Management software covering Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 for ESG reporting purposes.
